Review — Graph Editor (Adding Character) (3D Animation Using Maya)

The Graph Editor is the visual representation of the animation values and timing of your scene. The in-betweens are represented by the curves flowing between the points (keyframes). In other words, the way an object gets from point A to point B to point C is determined by the tangents in the Graph Editor. To use it effectively you must be familiar with the different tangent types shown in Figure 4.1.

•    Spline — this will give you soft, organic types of motion.

•    Linear — creates very stiff, mechanical motion.

•    Stepped — there are no in-betweens; objects will pop from one key to the next.

Note that these types can be mixed by breaking tangency and then using different in-tangents and out-tangents on a single keyframe.
