Lead-acid Batteries

The lead-acid battery has proved, even today, to be the most suitable choice for vehicle use. This is particularly so when cost of the battery is taken into account. A lead-acid battery (Fig. 13.53) is an electro-chemical device. It has a voltage and can produce current as a result of chemical reactions that deplete battery materials. A reverse current forced through the battery causes chemical reactions, which restore battery material. A properly maintained conventional battery in an automobile normally provides three years of trouble free service. Proper mainĀtenance includes keeping the battery clean, charged, full of water, and well supported in the battery case. In the following sections the details of conventional lead-acid battery are presented.
