Part 5 - Health and safety issues
Part 6 - Your role on placement
Encouraging good health and safety practices in the
workplace is important for employers and employees.
By law, under the Health and Safety at Work and other
regulations, organisations are obliged to:
To complete the assignment for this part of the unit,
you will need to describe your role and responsibilities
while on work experience. You should use your daily
diary or log book as your starting point to write a
detailed report or make a presentation. You may also
have received an outline of your placement duties
from the employer before starting your work or agreed
suitable tasks with your tutor - these too are good
sources of information to help you with this part of
your assessment. Make sure that you include all duties
you undertook and comment on the skills learned,
problems encountered and how you dealt with these.
It will also be useful to indicate your position in the
organisation chart described previously in this unit,
showing line management structures.
1.
Assess health and safety risks at work, e.g. by
nominating a health and safety offi cer and carrying
out risk assessments;
2.
Have control measures in place to monitor health
and safety issues;
3.
Maintain minimum levels of hygiene and comfort
by making sure that the workplace is clean, well-
ventilated, complies with minimum temperature
requirements and has mains drinking water;
4.
Record and report certain health and safety incidents
Part 7 - Roles of other staf
in the workplace, for example a serious accident
involving staff and/or customers. This can be done
by a nominated fi rst-aider or fi re safety offi cer;
While on work experience, you need to gather
information on the roles of staff in the placement
organisation. You will use this information when
completing some of the assessment for this unit. You
could use job descriptions if these are available or
write general descriptions of staff roles, indicating their
positions on the organisation chart.
5.
Comply with regulations to protect the environment,
for example the rules on waste storage and trade
effl uent.
The induction to your placement organisation when you
fi rst start should include details of the organisation's
policies and procedures on health, safety and security.
Make sure you listen carefully and ask questions if there
is anything that you don't understand. If you are asked
to wear a security badge or tag, make sure you wear
it at all times for security reasons and to save your
embarrassment if you accidentally trigger an alarm!
Activity 22.8
Working as a group, draw up a list of the potential
health and safety issues in each of the following
placement organisations:
A travel agency;
A theme park;
A hotel;
A tourist information centre.
This activity is designed to provide evidence for P4.
