Be able to evaluate your own work
experience placement
SECTION 4
It's fair to say that we all learn from our experiences in
life and it's likely that you will have learned a lot from
your work placement (although it may not be obvious
to you just now!). This section of the unit gives you
guidance on carrying out an evaluation of your own
performance while on work experience.
3.
Behaviour in the w o rkplace - were you an exemplary
placement st u d e nt in terms of politeness, honesty,
integrity, responsibility, team working and
effectiveness?
4 .
Career aspirations - did the placement give you
an insight into a career path that you would like to
explore further?
Evaluation
5.
Employment opportunities - were any future job
opportunities offered to you? Perhaps a part-time
job or offer of employment when your course is
fi nished?
Part of the assessment for this unit asks you to evaluate
your own performance while on placement in relation to
your stated personal, career a n d curriculum objectives.
If you spent time completin g the chart discussed earlier
in this unit, with your ex p ected personal, career and
curriculum objective s fo r the placement, evaluating your
performance sho u ldn ' t be too diffi cult a task. Take each
of the objective s in turn and state whether or not it was
achieved. If y ou were successful give some details of
how the ob j ective was achieved. If unsuccessful, explain
why. You should also go beyond these objectives when
refl ecting back on your placement performance. There
may be examples of activities that you were unaware
of before you started the placement, but which were
of interest to you in terms of your personal or career
development. Also, more subjective aspects of the
placement, for example how you felt about being in
a work setting or your feelings about working inside/
outside for 7 or 8 hours a day, should be built into your
evaluation.
6.
Networking - did you make best use of your time
on placement to make good work contacts for the
future?
A good way to approach your personal evaluation is
to identify your strengths and weaknesses while on
placement, e.g. strengths could be that you were
always punctual and attended every day, whereas
weaknesses might be that you didn't ask as many
questions as you should or you had trouble using
certain computer software. You could present your
strengths and weaknesses as a chart.
Activity 22.9
Make a list of what you feel were your strengths
and weaknesses while on placement. How could you
build on your strengths even further and address the
weaknesses you have identifi ed?
You should also consider the following points when
carrying out your evaluation:
1.
Attendance and punctuality - did you attend
This activity is designed to provide evidence for P5.
placement regularly and manage to arrive at work
on time and be punctual for meetings?
Supporting evidence
2.
Skills development - what particular technical and
interpersonal skills do you think were developed
while on placement? Are there skill areas that you
feel would benefi t from further development?
When carrying out an evaluation of your own
performance on work experience you can consult
a range of evidence sources, such as your diary, log
