In-Depth Information
which is a brief explanation of an
organisation's primary purpose.
Some mission statements are
quite long, like this one from
easyJet:
Owner
Secretary (p/t)
'To provide our customers with
safe, good value, point-to-point
air services. To effect and to
offer a consistent and reliable
product and fares appealing to
leisure and business markets
on a range of European routes.
To achieve this we will develop
our people and establish lasting
relationships with our suppliers'.
Senior Travel Consultant
Travel Consultant
Travel Consultant
Apprentice Consultant
The mission statement for the
National Maritime Museum in
Greenwich is much shorter:
Fig 22.3 - Organisation chart for an independent travel agency
the person immediately above them in the hierarchy
(their line manager), e.g. the Senior Travel Consultant is
the line manager to the two Travel Consultants. If your
placement is in a very large organisation, you should
concentrate on developing an organisation chart for
the department where you are working.
'The Museum works to illustrate for everyone the
importance of the sea, ships, time and the stars and
their relationship with people'.
Find out if your placement organisation has a mission
statement and make a note of it to help with your
assessments. If they haven't perhaps you could offer
to write one!
Part 3 - Key activities of the
organisation
Part 4 - Products and services
To complete the assignment for this part of the unit,
you will need to list the key activities of your placement
organisation. These will differ depending on where you
are working. For a typical retail travel agency, the key
activities would include:
In the same way as you need to describe the key
activities, you will also have to gather information on
the products and services offered by your placement
organisation. Again, these will vary greatly depending
on where you go, but for a typical travel agency they
could include:
Selling holidays, short breaks, fl ights and other
travel products;
Package holidays, short breaks and fl ights;
Providing high standards of customer service;
Hotel bookings and travel insurance;
Liaison with a range of principals, i.e. tour operators,
airlines, hotels, etc.
Theatre and event bookings;
Managing fi nance and accounting;
Ferry services, car hire and airport parking;
Employing staff;
Rail and coach tickets;
Managing premises and offi ce services.
Special interest trips and cruises;
Some travel and tourism organisations summarise
their key activities by writing a mission statement,
Foreign exchange, travellers' cheques, visa and
passport services.
