In 1884, Charles N. Miller of Boston formed a small business making and selling homemade candy. In 1914, the company began manufacturing Mary Janes, a bite-sized, chewy molasses and peanut butter candy. Miller named it for a favorite aunt and on the candy wrappers appeared the likeness of a little girl. In 1989, the Charles N. Miller Company was sold to Stark Candy Company, which was itself acquired a year later by the New England Confectionery Company (NECCO). NECCO markets a wide range of Mary Jane products, including Mary Jane Tubs and Mary Jane Peanut Butter Kisses. Although still marketed, Mary Jane candies are nostalgia candies today.
