York Peppermint Patties

The York Peppermint Pattie is a flat, round, dark chocolate with peppermint creme inside. It was formulated and launched in 1940 by the York Cone Company, which mainly manufactured ice cream cones. The company had been founded in 1920 in York, Pennsylvania; it mainly distributed its product in the Northeast, Ohio, Indiana, and Florida. In 1972, the company was acquired by Peter Paul, which expanded production and aggressively promoted it nationally beginning in 1975. Peter Paul was sold to Cadbury in 1978 and, 10 years later, the Hershey Company acquired York Peppermint Patties when it purchased the confectionery operations of Cadbury Schweppes in the United States. It is one of the best-selling candies in the United States.
