Cadbury, George (1907-1995) and Barbara (1910- ) (birth control)

George and Barbara Cadbury were prominent Canadian birth control advocates. Barbara Cad-bury was a founder of the Planned Parenthood Association of Toronto in 1961. In her capacity as secretary, she wrote a letter to the minister of justice in December 1963 outlining the association’s support for decriminalizing birth control services. George Cadbury was the executive director of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. Both were instrumental in forming in 1963 the Canadian Federation of Societies for Population Planning. This federation allowed Canada to participate in the International Planned Federation for the first time in 1964. By 1966, this federation had become the Family Planning Parenthood Federation of Canada; George Cadbury was an executive member and one of the Federation’s representatives to Canada’s Standing Committee on Health and Welfare. In the 1970s, the federation became known as the Planned Parenthood Federation of Canada. Also during these years, George Cad-bury was the president of the New Democratic Party of Ontario (1961-1966).
