In-Depth Information
The 1937 floodwaters are still coming up in this Parkersburg, West Virginia, photograph
taken on Market Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets. Curious onlookers stand on the
sidewalk under the marquee of the Strand Theater and across the street in front of Moskin's
Credit Clothing. In the distance can be seen two men paddling a rowboat. (Photograph by
Artcraft Studio.)
Here is another view of Parkersburg's Market Street at Fifth Street, this one looking in the
opposite direction. The Strand's vertical sign can be seen at the left rear. The floodwaters
have deepened, and boats now crowd the street. The 1937 flood in Parkersburg crested at
55.4 feet—19.4 feet above flood stage but 3.5 feet short of the city's record crest of 58.9
feet, set in 1913. (Photograph by Artcraft Studio.)
