be missed. The 12-hour 4WD tours or three-day horseback trips offered by most of the
agencies in Malargüe are well worth taking.
Lying within its namesake fauna reserve about 60km southeast of Malargüe, Laguna
Llancancelo is a high mountain lake visited by more than 100 species of birds, including
flamingos.
Caverna de Las Brujas is a magical limestone cave on Cerro Moncol, 72km south of
Malargüe and 8km north of Bardas Blancas along RN40. Its name means 'Cave of the
Witches.' The cave complex stretches for 5km. Guided tours (admission and flashlights
included in the price) take two to three hours. Tours depart with a minimum group size of
two, although getting more people together will bring down the per-person cost. Check
with tour operators in Malargüe for details.
Los Molles
Before Las Leñas took over as the prime ski resort in the area, Los Molles was the only
place around where you could grab a poma (ski lift). These days it's a dusty windswept
village that would be slowly sinking into obscurity if not for its reasonably priced accom-
modation alternatives for those wishing to be near, but not in, Las Leñas, and its favored
status for rock climbers, hikers and other rugged outdoor types. The village straddles
RP222, which is 55km northwest of Malargüe. Karen Travel in Malargüe offers a range
of activities in the dramatic countryside that surrounds the village.
Hostel Pehuenche ( 011-15-4035-2339; www.caphostel.com ; dm AR$130-205) is one of
the best setup hostels in the country, offering a bar, 'digital playroom', transfers to Las
Leñas and extra-snuggly duck-down duvets.
The most modern and best equipped of the hotels here, Hotel Los Molles (
0261-15-691-5029; www.losmolleshotel.com.ar ; RP222, Km30; s/d AR$835/1114) features big
rooms with balconies facing out over the valley. A decent restaurant serves good-value
set meals (AR$75).
Buses heading between Malargüe (AR$35, one hour) and Las Leñas (AR$15, 30
minutes) pass through the village.
