In-Depth Information
Designed primarily to attract wealthy foreigners, Las Leñas ( 0260-447-1281;
www.laslenas.com ; mid-Jun-late-Sep) is Argentina's most self-consciously prestigious ski
resort. Since its opening in 1983 it has attracted an international clientele who spend their
days on the slopes and nights partying until the sun comes up. Because of the dry cli-
mate, Las Leñas has incredibly dry powder.
Its 33 runs cover 33 sq km; the area has a base altitude of 2200m, but slopes reach
3430m for a maximum drop of 1230m. Outside the ski season Las Leñas is also attempt-
ing to attract summer visitors who enjoy weeklong packages, offering activities such as
mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking.
Las Leñas is 445km south of Mendoza and 70km from Malargüe, all via RN40 and
RP222.
Lift Tickets & Rentals
Prices for lift tickets vary considerably throughout the ski season. Children's tickets are
discounted about 30%. One-day tickets range from AR$321 in low season to AR$472 in
high season (week passes are AR$1710 to AR$2517). Also available are three-day, four-
day, two-week and season passes.4
Rental equipment is readily available and will set you back about AR$250 per day for
skis or snowboards.
Sleeping & Eating
Las Leñas has a small village with five luxury hotels and a group of 'apart hotels', all un-
der the same management. They are generally booked as part of a weeklong package,
which includes lodging, unlimited skiing and two meals per day. Despite the country's
economic troubles, rates for foreigners staying in Las Leñas have changed little. All
bookings are done either online at www.laslenas.com or centrally through Ski Leñas (
011-4819-6060, in Buenos Aires 011-4819-6000; ventas@laslenas.com; Cerrito 1186, 8th fl) .
Apart Hotel Gemenis (weekly per person from US$1484) and Apart Hotel Delphos
(weekly per person from US$1520) offer similar packages without meals but do have well-
equipped kitchenettes.
There are also small apartments with two to six beds and shared bathrooms, equipped
for travelers to cook for themselves. Budget travelers can stay more economically at Los
Molles, 20km down the road, or at Malargüe, 70km away.
Restaurants in the village run the gamut, from cafes, sandwich shops and pizzerias to
upscale hotel dining rooms. The finest restaurant of all is Las Cuatro Estaciones, in Hotel
Piscis.
