Plate 4.4 Local effects of a bite by the Puerto Rican racer [ Alsophis ( Borikenophis )
portoricensis ]. The specimen pictured in Plate 4.2E and F was responsible for the bite shown
here (involving the distal and proximal phalanges, digit #2, L hand). The mild edema began to
progress within 1 h of the bite, and the victim noted paresthesia, mild pain, stiffness, and mild
ecchymoses. There were no sequelae, and the symptoms/signs persisted for several days, but
