Jersey Opera House : One of the major entertainment venues on the Island. It opened on
the 9 th July 1900 with the first performance being Sydney Grundy's “The Degenerates”
with one of Jersey's most famous daughters, Lilly Langtry having the honour of being the
first performer. Charlie Chaplin appeared here for 4 nights in August 1912, before he went
onto to international stardom. Throughout the year there is a varied programme of per-
formances by local groups and visiting artists. Further information is available from the

Jersey Seaside Festival : An annual festival held at Havre des Pas swimming pool on a
Sunday towards the beginning of August. There are water activities, live entertainment,
music, local arts as well as a wide range of foods. This is a great day out for all the family,
which recognises the island's connection to the sea.
La Fête dé Noué : This festival has become an annual fixture in the run up to Christmas in
St Helier. The opening ceremony is the switching on of the Christmas lights in the Royal
Square. Over the following weeks there is late night opening in St Helier with live music
and other performers, a Christmas market and in the last few years there has been a Nor-
man Market with a wide range of French produce on sale. For further information on this

Liberation Day: The Island was liberated from the German occupation on the 9 th May
1945, although the war in Europe finished on the 8 th May and it is marked each year by
a public holiday. Schools and most shops close and there is a public celebration in Lib-
eration Square, opposite the Pomme D'Or Hotel. In addition there is normally a range of
activities and events taking place around the Island.
North Coast Challenge : This is an annual sponsored walk along the north coast cliff path
from St Catherine's to Grosnez, allowing participants to see some of the finest scenery on
the Island. It normally takes place on a Sunday in September with the proceeds going to
Help an African Schoolchild , so if you are on the Island in September consider joining
Kevin Daly and the other organisers for a challenging but worthwhile day.
During the spring there is a South Coast Charity Walk, 15 miles from La Rocque to Cor-
biere. Money raised from this charity walk is donated to Jersey Mencap. This is an enjoy-
able way to spend a day if your visit to the Island coincides with the date of the walk.
Spring Walking Week: Enjoy some of the islands finest scenery in the company of an
experienced and enthusiastic guide. There are a large number of free walks, of various
lengths and difficulty, which will enable you to see parts of Jersey when they are a riot of
colour.
