In-Depth Information
Collas-Crill Island Walk: Originally known as the ITEX Walk it was first held in 1991
and it has turned into one of the major events on the Jersey calendar. On the Saturday
closest to longest day in June a significant number of hardy souls set out from the Elizabeth
Terminal, at St Helier Harbour, to walk the 48.1 miles around the Jersey coast. From 2014
it has become known as the Collas Crill Island Walk .
In 1991 15 walkers set out but the number is now usually in excess of 1,500.
It is a physically challenging route, the distance would be hard enough but there are thou-
sands of feet of ascent, particularly along the north coast footpaths.
Anybody who completes the course can feel justifiably proud of his or her achievement.
For the visiting walker it is great way to get to know the island, just don't plan on doing too
much on the Sunday.
If you fancy something different why not try the Peter Ward Mid-Winter Walk . Held on
the Saturday closest to the shortest day in December it represents a real challenge. It has
been running for just over 10 years and attracts (not surprisingly) a much smaller field.
Normally just over 100 walkers. There are 3 routes with the longest being 44 miles.
Although one often associates short December days with poor weather the year that we de-
cided to complete the Winter Walk conditions could not have been better. No rain, light
winds and reasonable temperatures.
Gorey Fete : Normally held the Thursday after the Battle of Flowers this is one of the
largest charity events of the year. There is fun for the whole family, centred on Gorey Pier.
It last all day and well into the evening with an entry fee.
Jersey Arts Centre : Located in St Helier the Arts Centre organises a number of events
throughout the year to catering for all aspects of performing arts. Further details are avail-
able online or from the box office 01534 700444.
Jersey Boat Show : Held over the 3 days of the first Bank Holiday weekend in May the
Boat Show has become more popular year after year. There is something to interest every-
body who has an interest in the sea, from top of the range ocean cruisers to small items of
clothing. In addition there are a number of on water displays with a wide range of food and
drink stalls. It is an ideal day out for all members of the family.
Jersey Food Festival: Normally held in May, this is a week long celebration of all that
Jersey has to offer in the way of local produce and local experts. Although there are end-
less opportunities to sample local food in a range of restaurants, there is so much more to
the week. Normally there is the opportunity to walk with an experienced guide to discover
what foods there are for free below the high water mark or what about watching local ex-
perts decorate cakes and bake bread. Every year there is something new to discover.
Jersey Live : This annual festival has become a firm favourite in the national music cal-
endar. Launched as a one-day event in September 2004 it has expanded into a two-day
event. Over the years a number of the biggest names in music have appeared on the vari-
