Sailing: Jersey has had a long and proud tradition of sailing, stretching back many centur-
ies and there are several sailing clubs and schools.
The St Catherine's Sailing Club , formed in 1953, is the largest dinghy sailing club in the
Channel Islands and is based at St Catherines on the east coast of the Island.
For larger boats there are two yacht clubs, the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club in St Au-
bins and St Helier Yacht Club based in St Helier. When the RCIYC was formed in 1869
it was became the sixth oldest yacht club in the world to have the name “Royal”. The St
Helier Yacht Club is one of the largest yacht clubs in Britain with over 3,000 members.
Both of the Clubs welcome visiting sailors.
In addition to the more traditional sailing craft there are some specialist associations, for
example the Hobie Fleet, which generally sails from Beaumont, in the heart of St Aubin's
Bay.
For visiting yachtsmen there is a marina in St Helier Harbour, from where it is just a short
stroll into the centre of town. There are several other locations around the island, such as
Gorey and St Catherine's where there are a number of visitor's moorings. Many visiting
yachtsmen will want to pass some time at anchor in some of the islands more dramatic loc-
ations. Beauport is an obvious choice.
