features great-value rooms with private bathrooms. The
hallways are a bit sterile, with tacky carpeting, and the
breakfast is nothi ng to w rite home about, but the price

from the Opera House, this is one of the best options in the
centre. The a/c rooms are comfortable with modern
amenities, TV, minibar and s afe. The re's also a little pool,
fitness centre and restaurant. R$210

a retro feel to it, with a 1980s-style bar decked out in dark
leather, but the 100-plus rooms are comfortable; the
executivos curiously have sinks in the bedroom itself,
while the pricier suites are much larger with grander
bathrooms. There are also a few standard rooms reserved
for smokers - they're not the best the hotel offers, with
carpeted floors and a bit of a musty feel to them.

the happening Ponta Negra district, 15km west of the city
centre, this is one of the city's best hotels, offering spacious,
well-appointed rooms set on sixteen floors. There's a sauna,
gym and infinity pool looking right onto the river; it's a
great spot fo r a sun downer, soaking up the much welcome
river breeze. R$346

hotel located in the Vieiralves district, about 3.5km north of
the centre, is a superb option, with spotless rooms, modern
amenities, a welcoming restaurant and excellent service.
The hotel is perfectly located for Rua Rio Branco, one of the
city's most buzzing spots, and home to plenty of bars and
restaurants; it makes for a great alternative to staying in
the city centre. R$185

option featuring welcoming rooms with modern amenities
set on five floors, each with safe, fridge and a/c units. Staff
are frie ndly a nd it's just a short walk to the city's major

favourite located in a pair of lovingly restored mansion-
style houses offers shared a/c or fan dorms with sturdy
bunks and lockers. There's a large communal lounge area, a
small patio garden, a rooftop terrace for breakfast with
great views towards the Palácio Rio Negro, and kitchen and
laundry facilitie s. Prices for HI mem bers are giv en in

recently refurbished hotel features sixty large rooms, each
with living area, veranda and kitchenette with hobs. There's
also a twentieth -floor p ool with great views over the city, a
gym and sauna. R$270
EATING
Most of the city's best restaurants are outside the centre in Punta Negra , Vieiralves and Adrianópolis , a taxi ride
away. Foodies will find that it's worth the expense, although there are a few restaurants in the city centre. One traditional
dish you should definitely try here is tacacá - a soup that consists essentially of yellow manioc-root juice in a hot spicy
dried-shrimp sauce. It's often mixed and served in traditional gourd bowls ( cuias ) and is usually sold in the late afternoons
by tacacazeiras (street-food vendors).

Amazonian cuisine at this renowned restaurant attracting
well-heeled Manauenses is superb, embracing African and
European creations using exotic local ingredients. The interior
features minimalist yet sophisiticated decor recalling life in
the jungle, including a wooden canoe and oars. Try the
tambaqui con crosta de castanha & banana assada ( tambaqui
fish with Brazilian nuts; R$92). Mon-Wed 11.30am-3.30pm
& 7-11.30pm, Thurs-Sun 11.30am-4pm & 7-11.30pm.
Cachaçaria do Dedé Manauara Shopping, Av Mario

is jam-packed with foodstuffs stacked on shelves, along
with floor-to-ceiling bottles of alcohol, with over 150 types
of cachaça on offer (there are allegedly over 800 stacked
away). The food's great too - fish lovers should try the oven-
cooked cod ( bacalhau manauara ; R$57), while meat lovers
can go for the carne do sol de filé do dedé (R$74). Mon-Fri
10am-11pm, Sat 10am-midnight, Sun noon-11pm.

1028. This vegetarian restaurant offers a por quilo self-
service (R$37.90) of regional dishes, including tapioca with
Brazilian nuts and tucumã (palm), and offers vegan and
sugar-free options along with a handful of gluten-free
products. The bread is home-made (try the delicious pão de
milho , or cornbread) and the freshly squeezed juices
(R$5-8) are well worth trying. Mon-Fri 7am-7pm.
