of the city's best regional cuisine is on offer at this pleasant
airy restaurant, reminiscent of an indigenous building with
natural materials and wooden furniture. The tucupí duck
baked in manioc juice and jambu leaves (R$79.50) is
excellent, and the barmen rustle up creative cocktails using
fresh local fruits. Mon-Sat 11.30am-3pm & 7-11pm,
Sun 11am-4pm.
with checkered tablecloths is among the city's best; you can
watch the pizzaiolo at work preparing all manner of pizzas,
including an Amazonian-style pizza tacacá with jambú ,
shrimps and olives (R$48.70); for dessert try the pizza uaçaí
with
açaí , tapioca and nuts (R$37.70).

8462. Once housing the employees of the Manaus Opera
House just opposite and thereafter a ballet academy, this
building has been fully refurbished to re-create the city's
atmosphere at the height of the rubber boom; the smartly
dressed waiters sport bow ties, but the atmosphere is
laidback and the menu features excellent fish options,
including tambaqui , tucunaré , pirarucu and dourado - all
big enough to share. Mains roughly R$69. Mon-Sat

With over five locations in and around town, this is an
absolute must for any foodie, and in particular meat lovers.
The central branch offers a por quilo lunch buffet (R$48),
while the smarter Vieiralves location (Rua Pará 490), also
open in the evenings, features 25 types of succulent meat
served by waiters dressed in typical gaucho (cowboy)
clothing; the buffet features paella, cod, salmon and a vast
selection of salads. The zucotto de cupuaçu dessert (R$9) is
a must. Daily 11am-3pm.

2208. This Japanese restaurant offers plenty of sashimi and
sushi dishes (R$70) of salmon, shrimp, octopus and tuna,
along with a good selection of udon noodles (R$40),
although the real draw here is the Peruvian ceviche (R$30).

is just the place to grab an energizing guaraná -based drink
or a cup of açaí (R$5) as you explore town; there's plenty to
choose from. For a real boost try the popeye drink, rustled
up with spinach, guarana, ginseng, granola, banana, açaí ,
Amazonian herbs and even quail eggs (R$5.50). Mon-Sat

Set on two floors, this por quilo restaurant with orange
decor is a popular lunch choice for those working in and
around the centre. The por quilo buffet (R$36.90) features
plenty of dishes, including a very decent selection of meats
and local fish. Daily 11am-3pm.

(fillet steak), this large restaurant with impeccable speedy

(R$16); the broccoli rice is particularly tasty. Mon-Sat

1970. This superb little café packed with fruits specializes
almost exclusively in tropical juices (R$7) with all manner
of exotic names, half of which you will probably have never
heard of. For a further vitamin boost, try the açaí , crushed
berries highly rich in anti-oxidants. Mon-Sat 7am-7pm.

serves 24 flavours of exotic ice cream - just grab a cup
and scoop away at the self-service, sprinkle with toppings
and pay at the counter (R$4.50/100g). Mon-Thurs

Tacacá da Gisela Largo São Sebastião s/n T 92 8801
4901. This friendly stall right by the Opera House only
serves tacacá (R$15), a speciality of the Brazilian Amazon
traditionally enjoyed in the late afternoon and a must-try;
it's made of tucupi (boiled manioc), jambu (anaesthetic
leaves that will leave your tongue numb for quite some
time), tapioca starch, dried shrimps and hot pepper, served
in a calabash tree bowl. Daily 4-10pm.

DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
If you're after some nightlife, the best bars and clubs are outside the centre in Ponta Negra , Vieiralves and
Adrianópolis , along with Avenida do Turismo in Tarumã , 18km north of the city centre, which is lined with restaurants
and bars. In the centre, the bars by the Praça do Teatro are frequented by tourists and locals alike - can be the rest of the
area dodgy and unsafe.

strong for years - you'll be hard pushed to find a table,
especially at weekends. Locals flock here for the delicious
bolinhos de bacalhau ( bacalhau fritters; R$23), washed
down with ice-cold beer (Skol R$7). The pernil (ham)
sandwich (R$11) is also a real winner. Mon & Tues
10am-1am, Wed-Sat 10am-2am, Sun 5-11pm.
