Elements of an Assessment Simulation
An assessment simulation incorporates the interactivity of a training
simulation and adds true e-learning functionality. As the viewer works
through the movie, interacting as you've defined, you can track and
store the results of each interaction. Like a training simulation, you
can specify different destinations depending on whether the user per-
forms the correct action. In addition, you can insert questions at any
point, in a variety of formats (such as multiple choice, true/false, short
answer, and more), and specify destinations and feedback based on the
answers the viewer gives.
You can manage the results of all the interactions for the whole
movie and specify how the results will be delivered to you. For exam-
ple, you may just want a text file e-mailed to you, or you may want all
answers integrated into an existing learning management system
(LMS). Captivate can produce output in formats compatible with sev-
eral e-learning standards. If you're integrating with an existing system,
you can specify whether you want to track results for each interaction
or send just a summary of interactions throughout the movie.
You can also create questions that are not scored, such as ques-
tions that ask for comments or suggestions, or ask the viewer to enter
subjective ratings for various things. You can even have those results
e-mailed to you.
A sample screen from an assessment simulation might look like
Figure 2-3.
For each question slide, the movie pauses while the viewer enters
appropriate answers. In the example in Figure 2-3, you can see a
matching question where the viewer is to match up the countries with
the topics that discuss them. This particular viewer got it right—you
can see the “correct” caption on the slide. Depending on your goals,
you may decide not to allow retries, or you may allow unlimited
retries. Note also that this slide is the first of two question slides for
this particular movie. The viewer can submit the answers, go back to
check on the instructions in the previous parts of the movie, or skip
this question altogether by clicking the Skip button. When you create
an assessment simulation, you'll have full control over which buttons
appear at which points in the movie.
