Fish Creek Observatory
On this same road, just 4 km /3 mi from Hyder we stop in at the Fish Creek Observatory.
Fish Creek is the reason most people come here. Each August to September the creek hosts
thousands of spawning salmon and where the fish go, the bears follow.
The parks people have built a long boardwalk that suspends viewers over the creek area
providing excellent and reasonably safe viewing of this annual phenomenon.
We did see several chum salmon preparing to spawn. This process, of the female preparing
the “nest” for her eggs in the gravel and finally laying them can take up to two weeks. We
watched several females working at those nests, raking the gravel with their tails.
