In-Depth Information
Follow San Simeon Creek through seasonal wetlands as it deposits fine sand and gnarled
driftwood along San Simeon State Beach.
Trip Description
From the parking area, head north along the raised wooden boardwalk toward the
mouth of San Simeon Creek (20'), which shelters a healthy population of turtles,
frogs, snakes, and fish. This boardwalk shields the surrounding seasonal wetlands,
which offer habitat to several endangered species. Winter rains fill the wetlands with
1 to 2 feet of nutrient-rich water, nourishing a multitude of small organisms waiting in
the mud. As you stroll, listen to the chorus of chirping frogs and watch ducks, egrets,
and herons descend on the marsh to feed.
Wheelchair access ends where the boardwalk stops, while the trail continues west
under Highway 1 (0.1 mile, 10') to San Simeon Beach. Endangered snowy plovers
nest along the south end of the beach directly west of the bridge, leading to seasonal
closures between February and September. If the beach is closed, head north toward
the creek to watch the tides roll in and out. Return the way you came.
