In-Depth Information
By late spring, female Southwestern pond turtles leave San Simeon Creek in search
of nesting sites on nearby hills. After digging a hole, they deposit several eggs and re-
turn to the creek. When the rainy season arrives, turtle hatchlings instinctively make
their way to the creek, where they feed, grow, and spawn, renewing the life cycle.
The creek is home to some 50 Southwestern pond turtles. Try to spot them basking
on logs or swimming and diving in the shallows.
