In-Depth Information
3. Next, we have the first of two dialogue exchanges between Joyce and Katie. In the first, Katie tries to
convince Joyce that she has just seen Jason, despite the fact that he is nowhere to be found. Set the Event
Browser's Filter pop-up menu back to All Clips, and select Scene 17 Slate 28 Take 3. Mark an In point at 3
seconds and 15 frames, just before Katie says “I'm playing with Jason,” and press E to append the clip to
the Primary Storyline.
Katie looks over to where Jason was standing to find that he's no longer there. In the rushes, we have a
point-of-view insert of the empty hallway, so let's add that next. Position the playhead at 51 seconds and 22
frames in the Timeline, just after Katie looks over and her face registers surprise. Select Scene 17 Slate 27
Take 1 in the Event Browser, and press Q to connect the clip to the Primary Storyline. Let's also add a reac-
tion from Joyce to see how she responds to this. Select Video Only as the source media and position the
playhead at 55 seconds and 12 frames in the Timeline. Set the Event Browser's Filter pop-up menu to Fa-
vorites, select Scene 17 Slate 29 Take 2 (favorite), and press Q to connect the clip to the Primary Storyline
(see Figure 12.17). Switch the source media back to All, skim to 45 seconds in the Timeline, and play back
the section.

4. The next section takes place at the photo display, so we need a shot that shows the characters walking to
this location. Set the Event Browser's filter pop-up menu back to All Clips, and select Scene 17 Slate 30
Take 1. If you play the clip, you'll notice that the audio isn't very good and we can barely hear the charac-
ter's dialogue. However, this is the only clip that we have of them walking to the photo display; because the
audio can be re-recorded and replaced later in a process known as automated dialogue recording (ADR),
we're still able to use the clip here. We'll show you how to replace the dialogue in Chapter 13, using ADR
audio files supplied on the DVD.
Mark an In point and an Out point on Scene 17 Slate 30 Take 1 between 07:16 and 11:21, and press E to ap-
pend the clip to the Primary Storyline. Let's also tighten the edit point by trimming the end of the preceding
clip. In the Timeline, select the Out point for Scene 17 Slate 28 Take 3 (the second clip from the end), and
ripple to the left by 1 second and 10 frames to trim the end of the clip (see Figure 12.18).
