8. Play back the first four clips in the edited sequence. Katie repeats the line “Can you pass me Kitty?”
when the scene cuts back to the master shot. Let's remove the extra dialogue with a Ripple edit. Select the
fourth clip's In point (Scene 7 Slate 15 Take 4) and ripple to the right by 4 seconds and 2 frames, to just be-
fore Joyce reaches for the toy (see Figure 10.11). We need to cut back to the master because there's new in-
formation (Joyce reaching for the toy) that isn't visible in the closer coverage of the scene. This wider angle
also provides a short breather before Joyce's next attempt to bond with Katie by offering to play with her if
she gets lonely.
