In-Depth Information
Before you begin to edit Scene 7, reread this scene in the shooting script. You'll notice that some of the dia-
logue in the script doesn't always match what was spoken in the footage you just evaluated. This is because the
actors improvised some of the dialogue during the shoot. This is a good example of how a movie's story can
evolve during its journey from script to screen. With that in mind, let's cut the scene.
1. Make sure the Event Browser's Filter pop-up menu is set to All Clips, and then select and play Scene 7
Slate 15 Take 4 a few times to get an idea of how the scene plays out. This scene is fairly short at only 41
seconds in duration, and the dialogue between the two actresses provides a good rhythm for us to work to.
The performances should always guide the editing of a scene, especially when cutting dialogue, and you
should look to the characters' actions and reactions as indications of when to cut to a new shot. Scene 7
Slate 15 Take 4 is a wide-angle master that covers the entire scene; it's a perfect shot to start off with be-
cause it gives us a good foundation to build the rest of the coverage on. The rest of the edit is simply a case
of replacing sections of the master with closer angles. Select Scene 7 Slate 15 Take 4 in the Event Browser
and press E to append the clip to the Primary Storyline.
2. Switch the Event Browser's Filter pop-up menu to Favorites and play Scene 7 Slate 17 Take 3 (first fa-
vorite). In this medium close-up of Joyce, her delivery of the line “Katie listen. There's no one here . . .”
differs greatly from how the line was delivered in the master shot (see Figure 10.2). Joyce comes across as
more compassionate here than she does in the master, and because Joyce's intention in the scene is to form a
connection with Katie, this is a far more preferable take. Place the playhead at 7 seconds and 12 frames on
the Timeline, just after Joyce delivers the line “Katie, listen to me,” and press W to insert Scene 7 Slate 17
Take 3 into the Primary Storyline.

3. Play back the first two shots in the Timeline, and you'll hear Joyce repeat the line “Katie, listen” a second
time. This is easily remedied with a Ripple edit. Select the edit point at the start of Scene 7 Slate 17 Take 3
and drag it 2 seconds and 3 frames to the right (see Figure 10.3).
