This is a straightforward dialogue scene between two characters that is simply covered with four angles and
uses fairly standard coverage. The footage is basically comprised of a two-shot on both characters and a single
on each. You'll come across variations on this type of coverage when dealing with other dialogue scenes in fu-
ture projects, so this is a good scene to cut your teeth on.
Double-click the
Craft of the Cut
disc image to mount it and launch Final Cut Pro. Open the Event Library and
select the Cutting Dialogue-1 Collection inside the Pranks Media Event to display the clips that you'll be work-
ing with in the Event Browser.
The Cutting Dialogue-1 Collection is made up of the following clips:

Scene 7 Slate 15 Take 4:
A wide two-shot master that covers the entire scene from start to finish and fea-
tures both characters in the shot (see Figure 10.1)

Scene 7 Slate 16 Takes 1 and 2:
Two takes featuring Katie's side of the dialogue presented in a medium
close-up
•
Scene 7 Slate 17 Take 3:
A medium close-up of Joyce's side of the dialogue
•
Scene 7 Slate 18 Take 2:
A second medium shot of Katie turning over in bed to end the scene

To follow along with the next exercise, you'll first need to rate some Favorite clips for Cutting Dialogue-1.
Drag a selection range or set In and Out points at the times specified below; then rate these areas as Favorites:

Scene 7 Slate 16 Take 1:
Between 26:23 and 36:12 (the end of the clip)
•
Scene 7 Slate 16 Take 2:
Between 06:03 and 10:22 and between 19:05 and 30:23
•
Scene 7 Slate 17 Take 3:
Between 00:00 (the start of the clip) and 07:19 and between 18:19 and 31:11
•
Scene 7 Slate 18 Take 2:
Between 06:02 and 19:08 (the end of the clip)
Before proceeding to the next section, choose a hard drive in the Project Library, create a new Project, and
name it Cutting Dialogue-1.
