Figure 10.3 A Ripple edit removes Joyce's repeated line.
4. Press Shift+/ (forward slash) to play back the edit. The second instance of “Katie, listen” has been elimin-
ated, but the edit on Joyce's line (“There's no one here . . .”) is quite abrupt because the line is delivered ex-
actly on the cut. We can smooth this out with a simple Roll edit. Press T to bring up the Trim tool, and click
on the edit point between Scene 7 Slate 15 Take 4 and Scene 7 Slate 17 Take 3 (the first two clips in the
Timeline). Roll the edit forward by 5 frames so that the edit starts on “no one here” (Figure 10.4). Play back
the edit to hear the result.
Figure 10.4 A Roll edit smooths out a hard cut on dialogue.
5. The edit is still not smooth enough because we're cutting the clip's audio in the middle of the line. Press
A to switch back to the Select tool and make sure snapping is turned on (pressing N toggles snapping on
and off). Control-click the first clip (Scene 7 Slate 15 Take 4) and choose Expand Audio/Video from the
shortcut menu to expand the clip's audio track. Select the audio Out point for Scene 7 Slate 15 Take 4, and
drag the audio to the left by 19 frames to eliminate the word “There's . . .” (see Figure 10.5).
