Objective
Positional representations can override whether a constraint is enabled or
suppressed. They can also use different offset values for a constraint. For
example, a positional representation named Open can change the value of
a Mate constraint from 0 mm to 10 mm, which will cause a gap to appear
between parts. These representations can be used to create overlays in a
drawing to show an alternative position or be used in an animation (see
Chapter 13, “Creating Images and Animation from Your Design Data”) to
reduce the number of steps needed to create the animation.
Using Design Accelerators
Inventor has a number of specialized tools that build common machine compo-
nents. Design accelerators come in two basic classes: calculators that work out
what geometry you will need (such as weld sizes) and generators that can simply
create components or use their built-in calculation tools to help you select the
appropriate components such as bolts or the size of a shaft.
It helps to build something when learning advanced tools. In this chapter, you
will be working on the design of a hand-driven metal grinder.
