Creating Level-of-Detail Representations
Level-of-detail representations will not just remove a component from visibility;
they will remove it from memory. If you need to work on large assemblies with lim-
ited system resources, the level-of-detail (LOD) representation is an invaluable tool.
Certification
Objective
1. Make certain that the 2013 Essentials project file is active, and then
open the c08-02.iam file from the Assemblies\Chapter8 folder.
2. Locate the Representations folder in the Browser. Expand the folder,
and expand the Level of Detail group.
On the right end of the status bar, two set of numbers report
the number of components displayed in the Design window and the
number of documents being accessed by Inventor.
3. Double-click the icon next to the Gears representation.
This reduces the number of displayed component occurrences and
the number of open documents by removing all the components
other than the shafts and gears that drive the mechanism.
4. Activate the All Content Center Suppressed representation and see
the effect.
A substitute LOD can
replace the assembly
with a single part or
a shrink-wrapped
version to improve
performance while
maintaining a refer-
ence in the assem-
bly. See Chapter 14,
“Working with Non-
Inventor Data.”
5. Right-click the All Content Center Suppressed LOD, and select Copy
from the context menu.
6. Rename the new LOD Primary Components.
7. Double-click the browser icon of the Primary Components LOD to
activate it.
8. In the Design window, click the wooden handle.
9. Right-click, expand the Selection options in the context menu, and
select Component Size to be the selection filter for the assembly.
This opens a dialog box showing the volume of the selected part.
10. Change the selection value to 205, and click the check mark to select
the components smaller than 205 millimeters.
11. Right-click and select Suppress from the context menu. The effects
are shown in Figure 8.2.
