I
Email Me Whenever: Anyone Posts a Comment/A Comment Is Held for Moderation —These
options are a good idea. If you aren't holding comments for moderation, as we recommend,
email is your first line of defense. Be ready to keep an eye on your email traffic and move in
quickly if a comment is over the top. This setting is also helpful in case some comment spam
sneaks by Akismet.
Before a Comment Appears: An Administrator Must Always Approve the Comment/Comment
Author Must Have a Previously Approved Comment —These are also tempting controls. We
recommend you leave them turned off unless you experience problems.
Hold a Comment in the Queue If It Contains X or More Links —The idea here is to hold com-
ments for moderation if they contain more than a certain number of links, as comment spam is
often full of links. The default setting for this option is two or more links, but we recommend you
consider setting this to three or more, as it's reasonable to think a legitimate commenter might
easily link to one other blog for comparison, then have a link in their signature file as well. (Even
this might seem a bit spammy to you, but you can consider it on a case-by-case basis as the
emails come to you with comments.)
