Example 3. Shadow Preference
Exposure for the barbershop scene as pictured
below requires some preferential treatment
for the shadow information. Notice the lost
highlight detail indicated by the slam of
information to the right of the histogram
(Fig. 3). This lost information falls in the bright
sky outside the shop and the l orescent tube
light over the mirror in the image below. This
detail information is not as critical as the detail
inside the shop. The exposure, weighting the
shadow information, (Fig. 3) will ultimately
produce a better overall print.

If the initial exposure for the same scene presented a histogram such as
Fig. 4, the resulting image would be far too underexposed as pictured
above with excessive loss in the shadow information.
