Reading the histogram accurately in the i eld directs us
to readjust exposure and reshoot until we produce an
exposure that maintains good shadow detail, such as the
histogram illustrated in Fig. 3.

Example 4. Extreme Lighting Conditions
The image of the bar interior and television is a dii cult lighting situation. To
expose to preserve both highlight and shadow information in such extreme
lighting conditions would be impossible, as the brightness of light and
the dim room light exceed the dynamic range of the camera's sensor. The
corresponding histogram displayed for this scene indicates loss of detail in
both the highlight and the shadow information. There is enough detail in the
overall scene however to make the image visually “work” despite extreme
loss of detail at both ends of the scale. The histogram for this scene therefore
actually indicates a relatively good exposure for these conditions and overall
mood of the image.
