. The high strength-to-weight ratio of
composites is more favorable than their ratio of strength to size. The general con-
cept of composite materials has great appeal. It offers the prospect of microstructu-
rally combining various classes of materials, by design, to realize superior sets of
properties not obtainable from any of the constituent materials serving alone.
