10.8.2 Hydrothermal Processing of Composites
The nature invented composites—wood (cellulose and lignin) and bone (the poly-
mer collagen and the mineral HAp)—are specific examples that a composite can,
and often does, have much more desirable properties than the individual pure or
virgin materials from which it was made. Man-made composites have also been
successful, as in the case of the rubber tire, which in its most common modern
