Actually, this is an old idea (witness straw in bricks, horsehair in plaster, and rein-
forcing bars in concrete), but modern engineering requirements have become much
more demanding, particularly, with regard to specific strength and stiffness for
aerospace, military, and similar critical applications. By 1947, the filament-wound
glass composite rocket motor case had been successfully flown, and the associated
industrial contractors supported the Navy's decision to use fiberglass motor cases
for the Polaris missiles. Since then, composites have served in successive generations
