texture vs. Color
The new material style created in Exercise 5.2 will be used to represent new
pavement as a solid black color. You may be wondering why a pavement texture
was not used for this application. Although textures can create a very interest-
ing and realistic effect, for large areas such as parking lots or grass areas, you
often cannot even see the texture until you are very close. And then, if you get
too close, the texture can look odd. Consider that when choosing between tex-
tures and colors. Colors look the same at any distance, and textures often look
appropriate only within a certain range. Textures are good for small areas that
you would view close up such as buildings, sidewalks, or small landscape areas.
Colors are better for large uniform areas that you view from far away such as
parking lots, fields, beaches, and so on.
exercise 5.3: Create a Material style with a
texture
In this exercise you are going to create a material style that will be used to
represent parking stalls in a parking lot. The style will be configured using an
image file that represents a single unit of a repeating pattern of parking stalls.
If you are continuing from the previous exercise, you can skip to step 3.
