CHAPTER 9
Tutorials
The following tutorials were designed so you can work systematically at
your own pace to more fully understand some of the concepts discussed
in the previous chapters. The tutorials also were designed to aid in testing
the quality of your profiles, and, lastly, designed to reinforce some of
Photoshop's tools and processes as they relate to color management.
Items in bold type indicate a menu, key command, or tool to be selected
as part of the tutorial. Whenever possible, I've tried to provide both menu
and key commands as well as some tips and tricks that are Photoshop
related. For those working on Macintosh versus PC, I've provided the
two key commands, Macintosh first, followed by the PC, such as
Command/Control S . 1
I have referenced tutorials within the various chapters throughout the
topic. Tutorial files are found on the CD that ships with this topic. There
is no reason why you must work with all the tutorials or even try them
in any particular order. You may find you will want to go through the
tutorials more than once. In some cases, the text accompanying the tuto-
rials are presented to reinforce concepts already discussed. However, I
think that it can be useful to go through a particular step, and then
analyze what and why a certain behavior takes place.
One other noteworthy item: A few commands, such as Assign
Profile and Convert to Profile , were moved in Photoshop CS2. Since
it's possible that many readers still will be working on a version earlier
than CS2, I've specified both menu locations by version in the following
tutorials. Other than a change of location, the functionality is the same.
Because the Print with Preview command was totally overhauled in
Photoshop CS2, there are two different tutorials. I hope you find these
tutorials helpful in understanding the concepts presented.
Before beginning the tutorials, you will want to set your Photoshop
Color Settings to U.S. Prepress Defaults ( North America Prepress 2
in Photoshop CS2). You can use either setting if your copy of Photoshop

The key command equivalency is simple: Command (Mac) is Control (PC).
Option (Mac) is Alt (PC).
