Images can also be previewed using the preferred profiles loaded in
the ColorSync utility preferences by clicking the Default Profile radio
button. If an image is opened and the user then wishes to view the gamut
of that embedded profile, there's a button called Add to List . This will
extract the embedded profile data to plot a gamut map. A third option
for viewing the image is the Gamut Warning . When this radio button is
selected, the loaded output profile shows all out-of-gamut colors with a
colored overlay, much like Photoshop's Gamut Warning feature.
The forth option for viewing images is invoked when selecting the
deltaE radio button. Selecting this option and then picking an output
profile and rendering intent produces the Grayscale preview seen in Fig.
8-15. The idea is to illustrate where within an image the greatest differ-
Fig. 8-15 Seen here is the Image Inspector in GamutWorks when set in the deltaE mode. This Grayscale overlay shows which colors and
tones would be affected by the loaded profile, in this case a CMYK Matchprint. The deltaE calculations are based upon the source and
destination color spaces, whereby lighter tones displayed have a higher deltaE value. This overlay visually shows which colors and tones
in this image will be affected the most by converting to this output profile. The original spectral gradient is almost totally white, indicating
a high deltaE (differences) between the source and destination colors.
