In-Depth Information
these data are relevant in developing risk understanding. Gaining
expertise about the processes involved and about the impact of inter-
ventions with these work processes will support the awareness of where
and how risks might appear. Employees who best understand the work
process will have the highest awareness about where and which things
might go wrong and how best to anticipate them. The main effort in
improving risk understanding is in strengthening the frame of reference
of all employees, with a special focus on safety and danger. Special
attention needs to be given to the fact that each employee has a differ-
ent mind-set and that information can only be absorbed if there are
enough connections to the present state of knowledge.
Brain-based safety promotes all investments to create personal mas-
tery: understanding the processes with which employees have to work.
This understanding should go at least one level further than the situa-
tion demands to complete the assignment. If a team has to do a com-
plex operation, the first level of expertise is in how each of the steps of
the operation has to be done. This is the knowledge that is needed
when everything goes according to plan. But as soon as something
unexpected happens, a second level of expertise is needed to under-
stand the nature of the complications.
TIPS FOR TRANSFER
Tip 1: The Toolbox Meeting
Definition: A meeting before a task starts in which all the participants
discuss:
The assignment. What has to be done and reached?
2
The task. What exactly are we going to do? Which steps do we
take? Which tools do we need? Who is taking which role?
2
The Process. What is happening in the system we are working on?
(The relevance of this is discussed in Chapter 6.)
2
Team spirit. Can we give feedback on each other
'
s safety behavior?
2
To structure the toolbox meeting, a checklist with the previous
topics can be used. For example:
I know exactly what the assignment is, when we have to be ready,
and how the end result looks like.
2
I know what I have to do in this assignment.
