6 Select the Create new fill or adjustment layer button ( ) at the bottom of the Layers panel, and select
Curves; the Properties panel appears with the curve control on it.
7 Click the straight curve line to add at least five random anchor points, and then click and drag some of
the anchor points up and others down in an alternating fashion. This should create a metallic look to
the clock casing.

8 You just created an adjustment layer, which can be turned off and on by checking the visibility ( )
icon to the right of the Curves 1 layer in the Layers panel. Notice that your selection was automatic-
ally turned into a mask that is applied only to that layer.

As you can see, simple selections can be turned into more complex selections and masks if you know
where to find those features. In the next section, we use some other basic selection tools, but also take
you deeper into Photoshop selections that will help you to build more complex selections.
9 Choose File > Save and File > Close.
Taking the Lasso tool to the max
The Lasso tool ( ) is one of the defaults methods for starting a selection. Unless you have a steady hand,
you won't be able to count on achieving a precise selection with this tool, but it is a fine way to start if
you choose to refine your selection, or plan on feathering (vignetting) to soften those imperfect selection
edges.
