In-Depth Information
The Default Lasso tool ( ) allows you to click and draw, just like a brush, to make a selection. When us-
ing this tool, you typically need to encompass the entire area that you want to select, starting and stop-
ping at the same spot to create a closed selection.
Polygonal Lasso tool
Using the Polygonal Lasso tool ( ), you can click and release to create straight lines from one point to
another. Use this tool to quickly make straight line selections. Using the Polygon Lasso tool is fast and
easy; however, in Lesson 4, “The Pen Tool: Beyond the Primer”, you will discover how to use the pre-
ferred method for making straight line selections, which is the Pen tool.
Magnetic Lasso tool
The Magnetic Lasso tool ( ) allows you select a location on the edge of an object that you want to select.
As you move your cursor along the object, the selection border snaps to the edges of the object in the im-
age. Based on a few settings from you, Photoshop automatically adds points that create a selection when
you close the selection process.
Alternating between the Polygonal and regular Lasso tool
You can easily switch between the Lasso tool and the Polygonal lasso tool, even if you are already in the
middle of creating a selection. In this next section, you have an opportunity to mix a straight line polygon
Lasso selection with a selection made with the more freeform Lasso tool.
1 Choose File > Browse in Bridge and open the file named advps0302.psd located in the advps03les-
sons folder. An image of popcorn appears.
2 Choose File > Save As, and in the File name text field, type advps0302_work . Make sure the file you
are saving is in the Photoshop (PSD) format and that you are saving into the advps03lessons folder.
Click Save.
3 If you cannot see the Polygonal Lasso tool ( ), press and hold the Lasso tool to select it.
4 Click once on the top-right corner of the popcorn box, and then click the bottom-right side of the box.
Notice that a segment is created, indicating the area that will be selected.
5 Continue to follow the edge of the box until you reach the top-left edge of the box.
