Pasting vector objects from Illustrator
In this next part of the lesson, you'll take a vector object that is copied from Illustrator and turn it into a
custom shape in Photoshop.
1 Launch Adobe Illustrator. If you subscribe to Adobe's Creative Cloud, you have access to Adobe Illus-
trator and can download it as part of your subscription.
2 From Adobe Illustrator, choose File > Open. Navigate to the advps09lessons folder and double-click
the file named advps09_footprints.ai . Artwork for footprints appears.
3 In Adobe Illustrator, choose the Selection tool ( ), and then press Ctrl+A (Windows) or Command+A
(Mac OS) to select all the artwork.

4 Choose Edit > Copy, and then File > Close, do not save any changes. Return to Photoshop.
Note that you should not have any layers active when you paste a path from Illustrator. If a layer is
active, you'll end up creating a mask of the active layer with your shape.
5 Make sure you have no layers active in Photoshop by selecting Select > Deselect Layers.
6 Choose Edit > Paste. A dialog box appears offering you the option to paste your vector object as a
Smart Object, Pixels, Path, or Shape Layer. Choose Paths and click OK. The path of the footprint art-
work appears on the image.

7 Choose Edit > Define Custom Shape. When the Shape Name dialog box appears, type Footprints , and
then click OK.
