Direction handles control the curvature of the lines in a path. Because the exiting direction handle
created in step 3 is pointing down, the line will want to go down. To draw the hinged curve, you
must change the angle of this direction handle so it points upwards.
5 Make sure you release the Alt/Option key; then place your cursor over the next square, located at the
end of the second curve. Click and drag straight down to create the third anchor point. Continue to drag
the mouse until you form the curve in the template.
6 Again, press and hold Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) to temporarily switch the Pen tool to the
Convert Point tool. Once again, position the Convert Point tool over the direction handle for the exiting
direction line, and click and drag this point so that it points upward and the direction lines form a V.
7 Repeat step 4 for the final curve at label 4. After you have created this final anchor point, press and hold
the Ctrl key (Windows) or Command key (Mac OS) and click the art board.
8 Choose File > Save to save your work, and then choose File > Close.
Creating a selection with the Pen tool
In this section, you will have the opportunity to practice what you have learned. You will use an image to
make a pen path around an item, create a selection and a silhouette from your Pen path, and then use your
pen path to create an adjustment layer that will change the hue of the selected item.
1 From Photoshop, choose File > Browse in Bridge and locate the ps11lessons folder (if it is not already
open).
2 From the ps11lessons folder, select the file called ps1102.psd . An image that contains some flowers
opens in Photoshop.
3 Choose File > Save As. In the File name text field, type ps1102_work , choose Photoshop from the
format drop-down menu, and then navigate to the ps11lessons folder. Click Save.
4 Select your Zoom tool from your tools pane and make sure that Scrubby Zoom is unchecked in the Op-
tions bar at the top.
5 Click and drag with the Zoom tool so you encompass the center of the flower in the lower-right area of
the image. This is the flower that you will build a path around.
Click and drag with the Zoom tool to zoom into the center of the flower.
