Formerly the Golden Express Hotel, this kitsch complex features a chapel-like reception
and four bright motel-style units. The best value of the four classes are the superior
single/double rooms, with wood floors, a bit more space and tubs. A planned new wing
will bring a bit of boutique to Bagan Umbra.

The smartest re-
sort in the Nyaung U area, Amazing Bagan does indeed boast an amazing lobby com-
plete with a hanging display of supersized Pathein umbrellas. The bungalow suites in
brick buildings mimicking old Bagan architecture are best. Personal touches include sun
hats in the rooms, free internet and bicycles. Located next to the golf club.
Eating & Drinking
Nyaung U's Yar Kinn Thar Hotel Rd (aka Restaurant Row) is a strip of atmospheric
open-air eateries geared towards foreign visitors. It's touristy, but easily the epicentre of
Bagan action as far as such a thing exists. Many of the restaurants are copycats, with
similar 'everything goes' menus (Chinese, Burmese, Thai, Indian, pizza and 'Western'
options).

One of the most popular
Burmese restaurants in the Bagan area, the owners specialise in the personalised table-
top buffets that characterise the national cuisine. However, here they really go to town,
with 25 dishes or more appearing at the table, including seasonal specials such as as-
paragus. Bring a crowd to share.

'No good, no pay' is the man-
tra of this justifiably confident operation serving delicious veggie and meat curries on ba-
nana leaves (or plates) with an endless stream of hot chapattis and five dollops of condi-
ments (including tamarind and mint sauces). With some advance notice, the chef can also
whip up various biryani rice dishes.
