Introducing the Structure of Metadata
A key thing to remember when uploading media is metadata entry. Metadata is essential
to finding assets within Final Cut Server. The more metadata you have (and the more
accurate that metadata is), the easier it will be for you and your colleagues to find desired
assets when searching through the thousands and thousands of assets inside Final Cut
Server. To organize that search, metadata is ordered into fields , groups , and sets .
Basic metadata starts as a field. One metadata field that is always required is the filename.
Final Cut Server populates the filename metadata field with the existing filename. It will
also help you fill in the blanks with any metadata that it recognizes from a file. However,
there are usually plenty of other blanks for you to fill in, such as lookups . Lookups are pre-
set pop-ups from which you choose the appropriate option. The benefit of using lookups is
not only their ease of use, but also that they help those of us who don't use a spell-checker.
The number of potential metadata fields can seem overwhelming, so metadata fields are
gathered into logical families called metadata groups. Depending on the needs of your
organization, you may use the default groups or choose among many customized groups.
Lastly, the groups are arranged into metadata sets. Some sets contain the same groups;
some sets are completely different. Again, this is to simplify and specify the number and
types of metadata fields for an asset.
NOTE Once a metadata set is applied to an asset, the chosen set cannot be changed.
The metadata entered into the fields can be altered, but not the choice of which meta-
data fields/groups are used.
