A.6 CREATING NEWDATA FILES IN SPSS
At some point early in your work with SPSS you will be creating data files.
Probably the most common way that you will do this, especially if the size
of the data set is not unwieldy, is to enter the data directly into an SPSS
data file (you eventually reach a point in either the number of variables or
the number of cases where you might want the alternative data recording
strategy as described in Section A.9). Open the SPSS application. From
the main SPSS menu select
File
➜
New
➜
Data

with a blank data file as shown in Figure A4.
There are two ways that data files can be viewed:
Va r i ab l e Vi ew
shows the information on the variables in the data
file. Each row represents a single variable; each column deals with a
different piece of information about the variable.
Data View
shows the actual data values. Each case occupies a row
and each variable occupies a column. This is the view SPSS provides
when you first open a data file.
