In-Depth Information
There are two ways to view data files: Data
View and Variable View. Click on your choice
to display that view in this window. Currently,
what you see is the Data View.
Figure A4
This is the window that opens when you ask SPSS for a new data file.
A.7 VARIABLE VIEWOF THE DATA FILE
We recommend that when you construct a data file for a new data set
you first click on Va r i ab l e Vi ew at the bottom left portion of the data
file window (see Figure A5) to type in the names of your variables and to
record some information about them in SPSS. Once you have recorded
this information, you can switch to Data View and enter your data.
A.7.1 VARIABLE NAMES
In the Va r i ab l e Vi ew shown in Figure A5, we have typed in the name
of four variables: subid , which is our identification code for each par-
ticipant; gender , which is the gender of the participant; group ,whichis
the group to which the participants have been randomly assigned (this is
the independent variable); and score , which is the numerical value of the
dependent variable. SPSS has filled in the rest of the information with its
defaults.
