Step 3: Adjust AutoFill and Page settings
The bottom of the dialog contains two other settings that affect the topic production process:
Autofill with Selected Images - Choose this option to instruct Elements to fill the frames
that are created on each of the pages with the images that you have selected in the Organ-
izer before entering the project. You can choose to leave this option unchecked which will
create the topic with a series of empty frames layered against the theme's background. Then
you can drag pictures from the photo bin to the frames or click onto the frame itself and
locate a suitable image in the browser window that appears.
Number of Pages - The number of pages for books to be produced online is set to a mini-
mum of 20 as this equates to the smallest page count (18 pages plus title and end paper). If
you have selected one of the 'print locally' options then the page count will equal the num-
ber of pages needed to display the images you have selected. Few selected images will mean
fewer pages, but the total number will also be determined by the theme you choose as each
design uses different numbers of frames on each page.
Note: You can create more pages than the number indicated in this setting by adjusting the
figure displayed here.
Step 4: Adjusting the look of the topic pages
Each book page is created based on two style characteristics - the Theme and the Layout .
The central part of the Photo Book dialog contains a series of thumbnails representing dif-
ferent designs or Themes. Themes in Elements refer to matched frame designs and back-
ground image combinations created to provide a uniform look to your multi-page docu-
ments. Layouts, on the other hand, control the number and general position of the pictures
on the document pages. You select a Theme in this dialog, click the Ok button and when the
book is produced the layout is random - a setting where Elements creates the pages in the
book using a variety of the default layout options.
Choosing a different layout
In previous versions of Elements, you could choose a specific layout for left and right pages
at this point in the topic creation process. This workflow changed in version 9.0. From that
release a random layout setting is used first and then you can fine-tune each page later us-
ing the different settings in the Pages section of the Create panel.
It is important to realize that all settings in this dialog except for the page size and the ability
to order the topic online can be adjusted later in the process. Extra pages and images can be
added or removed. The frames, backgrounds and themes can also be changed by applying
an alternative design from those listed in the Content panel.
