Creating Photo Books with Elements
This Photo Book feature combines the template-like production of the original Elements
photo projects along with some unique, newer, features which include:
t the ability to auto place and size a series of selected photos,
t a special Frame layer type that can store, and provide, edit options for both an image
and its frame, and a Smart Object layer that is used for storing image content such as
photos (when dragged from the Photo Bin), graphics and shapes,
t a unique multi-page document format called the Photo Project Format or .PSE docu-
ment,
t the option to apply frames, backgrounds and whole themes (a combination of frames
and backgrounds) to photo projects, and
t the ability to add text, graphics, shapes and special effects to the project from those
listed in the Content panel.
Photo Books are a real bonus for all those users who regularly want to produce a series of
pages containing multiple photos. The scrapbooking fraternity will certainly find plenty to
love as the feature provides more ease of use, flexibility and customization than was previ-
ously available. General photographers too will find the whole book production process
truly infectious.
Random or selected page layout options
Once you have selected the Photo Book option a new dialog will appear. Here you choose the
size and type (print locally or online) of book you desire, you get to pick the theme (frames
and background) used for the pages. There is also a preview panel in the dialog providing an
indication of the look of the final design. At the bottom of the window is an option to auto fill
the layout with the selected images and a page count detailing the number of pages that Ele-
ments will create automatically. You can alter the page count by changing the number here
but you can also add or delete pages later on so no need to be too precise at this point.
Drag 'n' Drop page sequencing
New for last couple of revisions of Elements is the ability to
rearrange the 'double-page-spreads' in the pages panel on
the right of the workspace. Just click and drag the two page
set to a new position in the sequence of vertical thumb-
nails. The pages will then shuffle to accommodate the
newly positioned spread.
The exception to this feature is the title page, which is
a special case. As the standard photo book requires a
carefully positioned image on the front cover to suit the
requirements of printing and binding, this page can't be
moved from its position at the top of the Pages panel.
Double page spreads can now be moved to a new location in
Photo Book by simply dragging the thumbnail in the pages
panel.
