Guided - The Edit Guided mode in the Editor
This approach to editing was introduced a couple of editions ago and provided a much-needed
synthesis of having the program perform enhancements automatically, with no user control,
and the completely manual editing approach of the
Expert and Quick edit workspaces. Using a unique
step-by-step approach, the Guided edit feature leads
the new user through the processes involved in
performing a specific technique. The techniques
are grouped in the Edit Guided option found under
the Edit panel.
For some tasks, duplicate controls are included in
the Guided panel that directly manipulate their
counterparts in the wider editing workspace.
Guided is a great place to start learning more
about how to use the powerful tools in the Edit
workspaces. Selecting the Guided entry from the
edit options at the top of the workspace displays
a list of the tutorials that ship with Elements.
Clicking a tutorial heading will reveal subheadings
for specific topics. Selecting a heading topic will
then display a set of instructions together with
associated buttons and controls.
For instance, in the example here, two slider
controls for brightness and contrast are displayed in the panel. Moving either of slider will
perform the same action as adjusting the same controls in the Brightness/Contrast dialog
located on the Enhance > Adjust Lighting menu.
The Edit Guided edit
workspace combines step-
by-step instruction with
embedded enhancement
or edit controls.
Guided edit is best used for learning how to use new tools and techniques or, as is the case with
the Photomerge Faces, Photomerge Scene Cleaner, Group Shot and Exposure options, as a way
to step through complex techniques. There are three headings in the Guided panel - Touchups,
Photo Effects, and Photo Play. Each entry contain a collection of guided edits that are useful
when correcting images, applying multi-step changes, or wanting to create a stylized effect.
For extra information on using the Edit Guided mode go to Chapter 8.
Manual - The Expert mode in the Editor
The final editing approach is designed to give the user professional control over their editing
and enhancement tasks. Looking a lot like a funky version of Photoshop, the Expert mode
(previously called Edit Full) provides access to the complete range of editing tools available in
Photoshop Elements. Many of the features detailed here are very similar to, and in some cases
exactly the same as, those found in the Photoshop program itself.
