5. Click the OK button. Click the OK button in the System Properties dialog box.
The new environment variable, CLASSPATH, is set for the system. The Java™ 2 SDK will use the
CLASSPATH variable name to locate necessary files when using servlets. If needed, you may repeat the
above steps to add an environment variable named JAVA_HOME, which should have a value of
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_02\bin (or the location where you installed Java).
CONFIGURING AND TESTING THE TOMCAT SERVICE
When you use the Apache Tomcat Setup Wizard under Windows XP, Tomcat installs as a Windows
service configured to run automatically. Because services do not have a user interface, it can be difficult
to know when the Tomcat service is running.
The Apache Service Manager provides an easy way to determine if the Tomcat service is started or
stopped. The Apache Tomcat Setup Wizard automatically installed the Apache Service Manager, which
displays in the system tray when running (see Figures B-27a and B-27b). If necessary, perform the fol-
lowing steps to start the Apache Service Manager.
